Dr. Evelyn Ascough,
perfecting the art of
dentistry

By JENNIFER ANARETA-BURMAN

The sciences and the arts are two drastically clashing forces -like oil is to water, like black is to white. And judging by nature's "curse" on mankind, more often than not, people who are inclined to the sciences don't figure well in the arts, and vice-versa. But for Dr. Evelyn Ascough, it was different. She clearly has the best of both worlds wrapped in her fingertips. But the journey wasn't easy. "My first dream was to become an interior designer," she revealed. But her mother encouraged her to pursue a medical career instead. Her dilemma reached a resolution when Dr. Ascough turned her eyes on the field of dentistry. "Dentistry is the melting point between science and art," she said. "I wanted to become a dentist because I can apply my love for art and my training in science as well." And she did just that.

After graduating in the University of the Philippines in 1991, Dr. Ascough obtained her license and jetted off to the U.S to begin her career. While practicing in Los Angeles, her artistic side gave her a nudge once more. She realized that she wanted to do something more for her patients, aside from the usual care and repair of their teeth. She wanted her patients' smiles to be nothing less than spectacular and set off to discover the secrets of how it can be obtained. She went to UCLA for post-graduate studies on cosmetic dentistry that truly boosted her practice of general dentistry. "I incorporate the knowledge of cosmetics to every patient I come across. It's a plus for the patient. They may not appreciate it as much as I do, but I love it," she gushes.

After a very fulfilling career in L.A., Dr. Ascough moved to San Diego two years ago to pursue what she calls her "dream practice." With a brand-new office came the opportunity to put her artistic skills to the test. She designed the whole office herself and bestowed it with her own personal touch. Did she succeed, you ask? Stepping into her clinic for the first time, I think she definitely passed with flying colors. The office has an unmistakably elegant, Asian flair and exuded the feel of a spa more than a dental clinic (guaranteed to calm the nerves of even the most panicky of patients!).

Dr. Ascough's clinic provides a variety of services, combined with state-of-the-art technology, to make your visit as unforgettable and stress-free as it can be. Experience a difference in their thorough photographic exams, porcelain and composite veneers, natural-looking crowns and bridges, complete system diagnosis, dentures and partials, teeth whitening, dental implants, full mouth restoration and more.

The clinic not only stands out aesthetic-wise, but also excels in customer service. "It is our top-most priority here," Dr. Ascough says. "We do whatever would make my patients relaxed and whatever would make it convenient for them." Her attention to detail is as relentless as her passion for cleanliness in her clinic. And on top of that, you have her eternal promise of quality work and the greatest care for your teeth. She guarantees that patients will undoubtedly receive only the best for their money with her use of only the top materials. Unlike other dentists who sadly treat their profession no more than a "business," Dr. Ascough does not succumb to the elaborate visions of "shady" profits that dentistry may bring. "I only want the best for my patients. So I'll only deliver what's best for me and what's best for them," she proudly says.

Aside from rendering exceptional care to her patients, Dr. Ascough also strives to educate them on the importance of their teeth to their over-all health. She stresses that instead of focusing more on the material luxuries of life, we must first pay attention to our health, which she considers as a far more valuable possession that could not be taken away nor destroyed by anyone, but ourselves.

Dr. Ascough has breezed through a very colorful career, but she maintains that she can't be completely fulfilled without giving something back to the community, especially to her fellow Filipinos. It is her dream to reach out to the Filipino community as much as she can, with high hopes that many of her countrymen will ultimately benefit from her expertise. She also wants to share her knowledge with other Filipino dentists and plans to start a cosmetic group study in the near future.

With Dr. Ascough's skillful, artistic touch, you are definitely on your way to a brand-new, winning smile for the coming year. That's certainly something to smile about! Visit her dental clinic at 3333 5th Ave., Ste. 100, San Diego, CA 92101. Call 619-298-0821. www.DrYbee.com.
